Macau

You shouldn't let it pass not to go to Macau if you're visiting Hong Kong, it is just HK$300 away - roundtrip ferry fare to Macau  (approximately Php2,100).  There are free shuttle buses and a lot of free tasting near St. Paul Ruins. Before taking your lunch, go to places near the old church, you might feel full already after all the free tasting, so you can save your HK$35 for lunch, hehehe =)

From our guesthouse at Cosmic Guesthouse in Tsim Sha Tsui, we just walk going to Victoria Harbour and then to China Ferry Terminal.  China Ferry Terminal is exactly located at  33 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong.  Ferries leave for Macau every 30 minutes.

Travel time from Hong Kong to Taipa in Macau takes about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.  As much as I wanted to sleep during the travel, I have to fill up the 6 immigration forms for the 6 of us.

approaching Macau

Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China.  It is located across the Pearl river estuary from Hong Kong. Until 1999 Macau was an overseas territory of Portugal.  Macau is one of the world's most densely populated spots. It is best known as Asia's largest destination for gambling taking in even more revenue than Las Vegas.

As the first and last European colony in Asia, Macau has more visible colonial history than Hong Kong.  Walking through the old city could convince yourself you were in Europe - if the streets were devoid of people and Chinese-language signage, that is.  The Portuguese and Macanese population continues to maintain a presence, but most of the population is native Chinese.

Macau's official languages are Cantonese and Portuguese.

Upon arriving at Macau, there are a lot of tourist guides who will approach you.  The guides are mostly Chinese, we preferred the Pinoy tour guide.  He is asking for HK$50 guide fee per person.  We never regret having a tour guide because we maximized our Macau trip, guiding us which places to go first, which places have free shows, and where we could eat the cheapest.  HK$50 guide fee is truly worth it. We never hailed a taxi during the entire trip, we just ride on free buses going to casinos.  Just don't tell the driver that you're just there for the free ride, hahaha =)

You don't need to change your Hong Kong dollars to Macau Patacas because Hong Kong Dollars are widely accepted in Macau.

The HK$35 meal

The walk from Senado Square to the Ruins was an amazing experience!  There are a lot of free food sampling like biscuits, the yummy sweet beef, and the famous Portuguese egg tarts.

A souvenir shop with a Pinay vendor is located nearby the Ruins. The souvenirs are quite pricey but all types of souvenirs can be found here.

The Ruins of St. Paul refers to the ruins of a 16th-century in Macau including what was originally St. Paul's College and the Cathedral of St. Paul also known as "Mater Dei", a 17th-century Portuguese cathedral dedicated to Saint Paul the Apostle.  Today, the Ruins are one of Macau's most famous landmarks.  In 2005, they were officially enlisted as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of Macau.

don't harass your inaanak Ninang, hahaha =)

Gambling is Macau's biggest industry and busloads arrive daily from mainland China to try their luck.  In addition many Hong Kong nationals arrive on weekends with the same aim.  For many years, the Casino Lisboa was the most famous and a landmark well known to people outside Macau, but it is being eclipsed by Sands Casino which opened in 2004.  Nevertheless, the original Casino Lisboa is still worth a visit as its halls contain many original antiques on display from the private collection of gambling tycoon Stanley Ho.
