Camiguin : Sunken Cemetery and Guiob Church Ruins

Camiguin Island is a pear-shaped island with an area of approximately 238 square kilometers (92 square miles).  The island measures about 23 kilometers (14 miles) at its longest and 14.5 kilometers (9.0 miles) at its widest breadth.  The island is mountainous with the highest elevation reaching over 5,000 ft (1500 meters).  It is encircled by a national road with a total length of about 64 kilometers (40 miles).

When Camiguin is shown is movies, Sunken Cemetery is always included in the scene.  It is an awesome place to wait for sunset.

Sunken Cemetery is located at Brgy. Bonbon, municipality of Catarman.  During the volcanic birth of Mt. Vulcan that lasted from 1871 to about 1875, some areas in the town of Bonbon subsided, sinking the cemetery of the town to below sea level.  The place is commemorated by a huge cross erected in 1982.

Guiob Ruins is just 10 to 15 minutes drive away from the Sunken Cemetery...

The area is well maintained and improved by the local government of Camiguin.  There are also hired personnel to help maintain and clean the place.

A little history... Cotta Bato, former capital of the island had a simple and quiet life with rich and abundant natural resources.  Until on May 12, 1871 at around 6 p.m., what used to be a quiet and simple community turned out into a  horrifying  place as Mt. Vulcan showed its fierceful and violent  power.  All of a sudden, the beautiful island was devoured with huge rocks and mud.  Houses and most of the structures was crumbled into pieces.  The ground trembled, rolled and cracked...  The beautiful island was totally destructed in just 20 minutes of volcano eruption.  Hundred of lives were lost...
