Our strong determination to finish the pentalogy led us back to Rodriguez, Rizal.  We hiked the trilogy mountains Mount Pamitinan, Mount Hapunang Banoi and Mount Binacayan in September 3-4, 2016. It's time to accomplish the pentalogy today, October 8, 2016.

We met at Quezon Avenue because we have a service vehicle going to Rodriguez. In commuting going to Rodriguez, Rizal, make a way going to Cubao.  There are vans with Php50 fare going there.  From Poblacion, flag a trike going to Brgy. Mascap.

At Brgy. Mascap, register at the Barangay.  There is a Php50 registration fee and a required guide fee at Php500 per mountain (Php500 is good up to 5 persons).  Mountains hikable in Brgy. Mascap are Mount Ayaas, Mount Sipit Ulang and the newly opened trail going to Mount Oro. They will be opening a new trail and will name it "The Seven Peaks" in October 23.

We were assigned with Kuya Roland "Ado" Francisco.  He is well traversed at the 3 mountains.  Contact him prior to your climb at 0975-9270098.

midhike after an hour... we can view the summit from here...
From the jump-off is half an hour walking before finally starting the trek, and from there is an all-assault up to the top.  The trail is really exhausting because we felt no gush of wind.  We were quite lucky that we hiked after the rain but with the unforgiving heat of the sun, it can really tire and thirst you.

My husband was continuously shaking off my back because mosquitoes are attacking me in great number. This is the mountain I hiked that has a lot of mosquitoes, huhu! I got 70+ bites and glad-fully, I have brought a cream for insect bites and right after returning home immediately taken my son's antibiotic for allergies.  When you plan to hike Mount Ayaas, do not forget to bring and apply insect repellent to your exposed and even unexposed skin.  I am wearing long-sleeves but they have biten me on my both arms.

The trail is mostly forested and grassland going up to the summit.  We reached the summit 2 hours from the jump-off.

We hiked down after another 2 hours and had our lunch at the jump-off.  There is a water source in the middle of the hike of Mount Ayaas.

ending the trail with river crossing

There are lot of carinderias beside the Registration area.  Don't worry being hungry.

After an hour of rest, we immediately proceeded with our next hike, Mount Sipit Ulang.  Because we did the twin-hike, we chose the Banayad trail.  It is just an hour hike going to the summit.

It rained so hard after our Ayaas climb that made the trail so slippery and difficult. Still, we made it to the summit after 45 minutes.

I recommend that you try the Paniki trail and traverse Banayad trail.  Paniki trail has cave passages and will require hikers to do some acrobats but will take 2-3 hours going to the summit.  If you can arrive early, better try this trail and do a twin-hike to Mount Ayaas.

After 45 minutes of muddy and rock-formation ascend, you will be amazed reaching the top... Again, there are a lot of mosquitoes, bring and apply insect repellent.

And now, oras na para mag emo!

DENR Office at Brgy. Wawa, Rodriguez, Rizal
There are around seven famous and trekkable mountains just in the municipality of Rodriguez.  They are the pentagon peaks - Mount Ayaas, Mount Sipit-Ulang, Mount Pamitinan, Mount Hapunang Banoi and Mount Binacayan plus Mount Maranat and Mount Balagbag. All of the mountains are minor climbs and can be tried by beginners.  Moreover it is very near the Metro.  Who wouldn't love Rizal?  The hobby of mountain climbing is no longer for the rich.  One can climb with Php250 budget only.

The group met at Farmers Market in Cubao.  Vans getting to Rodriguez (formerly Montalban) are all stationed here with Php50 van fare.  From where we got off are trikes and jeepneys going to Brgy. Wawa with Php60 trike fare going to DENR jump-off.

There is a registration fee of Php50 and a required guide at Php500.  Contact Romeo "Jon" Espanola at 0910-1668471 prior to your climb.

After crossing the hanging bridge is the signage of the side-trips going to Pamitinan Cave and Bat Cave.
Balete tree
Balete tree and rock climbing area called "The Face" are some of the interesting places you will pass by in trekking Hapunang Banoi.
The Face

the "junction"

You will reach the "junction" 45 minutes from the jump-off.  The junction wherein when you go to the leftward side you'll reach Mount Hapunang Banoi or the other way, Mount Pamitinan. Snacks and refreshments like buko and softdrinks are available here.

The next trail after the junction is already the rocky part with bamboos that can help you reach some parts.  Start wearing your gloves after the junction for some bamboos have brown thin thorns that enters the skin and can be very irritating.  The rock formations are also jagged and sharp.  Proper shoe wear and gloves is a must.  Wear trekking pants and not shorts to avoid unnecessary cuts and lacerations.

One and a half hour after the junction is the summit.  Enjoy the scenery....

The first spot for photo ops is such an amazing view.  Though it is so difficult to climb that high spot, I still did with care and presence of mind.  The rocks are so sharp that it can cause serious cuts or just a plain slipping or you missed a part to step on will cause fatality. Do not go to spots or locations just to take photos.  Be mindful of everything because it can really cause your life.
that high spot... breathtaking and also fulfilling to reach

The guides will tell you what places are great for photo shooting.  Jon, just like the other guides, are really mindful and watchful of their guests.  They treat us like their families so they will tell that, "Maam/Sir wag po tayo dyan, delikado po dyan!".  Very Pinoy and very family-like.

What's great with Mount Hapunang Banoi and why it became my favorite mountain among the trilogy or even the pentalogy?  Mt.  Hapunang Banoi has unlimited spots where we can take stunning and breathtaking photos.  Ang dami talaga! That's why when climbing the twin mountains, Mount Pamitinan and Mount Binacayan, don't skip Mount Hapunang Banoi because I promise you this mountain has the most splendid and exquisite views!

Rodriguez is a town of mountains. From its north to south, a series of sloping ridges, hills and mountains ranges adorn the town. In fact, around 27% or the town is occupied by mountains and slopes.

Bernardo Carpio, who was trapped in two mountains according to legend, is told to have happened in the town.

Rodriguez (formerly Montalban) also has a historical story in Pamitinan Cave where Andres Bonifacio and seven (7) Katipuneros made their pilgrimage and covenant for freedom (the first cry of independence) in April 1895, a year before the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution, the first revolution in Asia.

The start of the trail is crossing the hanging bridge passing houses and concrete stairs going up. Warming up our sleepy bodies but it is already tiring and exhausting...

side trips to Pamitinan or Bat Caves

Still with lots  of energy, this is our first day of hike, mountains Mount Hapunang Banoi and Mount Pamitinan.  Among the trilogy hike, this is the easiest and the fastest summit we climbed.  You will pass through this old Balete tree and the rock climbing area "the face".
