Singapore : Bugis

From our guesthouse in 5footwayinn in Bugis, we just walk for 15 minutes in going to Bugis Street.  Bugis Street is the dubbed as the largest street shopping location in Singapore housing about 800 retail shops as of today.

Bugis was known in the 1950s to 1980s as the place where transwomen (transvestites) parade at night for sailors and military men in their relaxation.

In 1987 the Singapore Tourism Board called for a tender to re-develop Bugis Street.  It had its soft opening in the mid 90s with entertainment and F&B (Food and Beverage).

The management decided to adapt a new concept in 1997 of making Bugis Street an attractive landmark for street shopping. They provided fixed coverings and awnings to provide shelter to shoppers even on a rainy season.

In 2004 Bugis has its second phase of upgrading and is transformed to become the largest street shopping location in Singapore. It expanded to 2nd floor in 2005 and added another 64 stalls.

The newest addition to Bugis Village is the 3rd level which houses F&B stalls and an events atrium that hosts events and other promotional activities.

I always commend the Philippines for being so hospitable to tourists... I ordered here 4 sets of meals... I was so humiliated just because I asked the vendor for the 2 sets for take out and the 2 sets for dine in...I didn't understand her because she was talking in their language... She was so mad and then the man behind me talked to me in English and was apolologizing for the vendor's behavior.

We didn't believe that all locals of Singapore are ill-tempered... We were served here with great food mixed with hospitality.
