DENR Office at Brgy. Wawa, Rodriguez, Rizal |
There are around seven famous and trekkable mountains just in the municipality of Rodriguez. They are the pentagon peaks - Mount Ayaas, Mount Sipit-Ulang, Mount Pamitinan, Mount Hapunang Banoi and Mount Binacayan plus Mount Maranat and Mount Balagbag. All of the mountains are minor climbs and can be tried by beginners. Moreover it is very near the Metro. Who wouldn't love Rizal? The hobby of mountain climbing is no longer for the rich. One can climb with Php250 budget only.
The group met at Farmers Market in Cubao. Vans getting to Rodriguez (formerly Montalban) are all stationed here with Php50 van fare. From where we got off are trikes and jeepneys going to Brgy. Wawa with Php60 trike fare going to DENR jump-off.
There is a registration fee of Php50 and a required guide at Php500. Contact Romeo "Jon" Espanola at 0910-1668471 prior to your climb.

After crossing the hanging bridge is the signage of the side-trips going to Pamitinan Cave and Bat Cave.
Balete tree |
Balete tree and rock climbing area called "The Face" are some of the interesting places you will pass by in trekking Hapunang Banoi.
The Face |
the "junction" |
You
will reach the "junction" 45 minutes from the jump-off. The
junction wherein when you go to the leftward side you'll reach Mount
Hapunang Banoi or the other way, Mount Pamitinan. Snacks and
refreshments like buko and softdrinks are available here.
The
next trail after the junction is already the rocky part with bamboos
that can help you reach some parts. Start wearing your gloves after the
junction for some bamboos have brown thin thorns that enters the skin
and can be very irritating. The rock formations are also jagged and
sharp. Proper shoe wear and gloves is a must. Wear trekking pants and
not shorts to avoid unnecessary cuts and lacerations.
One and a half hour after the junction is the summit. Enjoy the scenery....
The first spot for photo ops is such an amazing view. Though it is so difficult to climb that high spot, I still did with care and presence of mind. The rocks are so sharp that it can cause serious cuts or just a plain slipping or you missed a part to step on will cause fatality. Do not go to spots or locations just to take photos. Be mindful of everything because it can really cause your life.
that high spot... breathtaking and also fulfilling to reach |
The guides will tell you what places are great for photo shooting. Jon, just like the other guides, are really mindful and watchful of their guests. They treat us like their families so they will tell that, "Maam/Sir wag po tayo dyan, delikado po dyan!". Very Pinoy and very family-like.
What's great with Mount Hapunang Banoi and why it became my favorite mountain among the trilogy or even the pentalogy? Mt. Hapunang Banoi has unlimited spots where we can take stunning and breathtaking photos. Ang dami talaga! That's why when climbing the twin mountains, Mount Pamitinan and Mount Binacayan, don't skip Mount Hapunang Banoi because I promise you this mountain has the most splendid and exquisite views!

I like the mountains because they make me feel small... they help me sort out what's important in life...(Mark Obmascik)
