Hong Kong : The Peak

Victoria Peak is a mountain in the western half of Hong Kong Island.  It is also known as Mount Austin, and locally as "The Peak".  With an altitude of 552 meters (1,811 ft), it is the highest mountain on the island, but Tai Mo Shan is the highest point in all of Hong Kong.  The summit is occupied by a radio telecommunications facility and is closed to the public.  However, the surrounding area of public parks and high-value residential land is the area that is normally meant by the name "The Peak".   It is a major tourist attraction, with 7 million visitors per year, that offers views over Central, Victoria Harbour, Lamma Island and the surrounding islands.

We stayed at  Cosmic Guest House at Tsim Sha Tsui.  We walked from our guesthouse to Victoria Harbour, and from here after some photo ops, we rode from Star Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui to Star Ferry Central in Hong Kong Island.

The loooooooong line at The Peak Tram

Riding The Peak Tram, the funicular railway, is the quickest and the most scenic way to get to The Peak.  It carries both tourists and locals to the upper Hong Kong Island.  The train capacity is 120 passengers per train set.

The Peak Tram terminal station is located at the Lower Terminus Station, Garden Road, near St. John's Cathedral.  The Upper Terminus is located below The Peak Tower shopping and leisure complex.

The Peak Tram's route covers only 1.4 kilometers, journey time is almost 5 minutes. It's maximum speed is 6 meters/second.  The four intermediate stations are the Kennedy Road, Macdonell Road, May Road and Barker Road. (Source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_Tram
