Vigan City

The City of Vigan is a fourth class city in the province of Ilocos Sur, Philippines. It is the capital of the Province of Ilocos Sur. The city is located on the western coast of the large island of Luzon, facing the South China Sea.

It is a World Heritage Site and that it is one of the few Hispanic towns left in the Philippines where its structures remained intact, and is well known for its cobblestone streets, and a unique architecture that fuses Philippine and Oriental building designs and construction, with colonial European architecture.

Former Philippine president Elpidio Quirino, the sixth president of the Philippines, was born in Vigan, at the current location of the Provincial Jail (his father was a warden); and resided in the Syquia Mansion.

Vigan is only 408 kilometers away from Manila, 45 kilometers away from Laoag City, and 139 kilometers away from San Fernando, La Union, the regional capital.

For only a minimal amount of Php150, one can already tour the nearby tourist attractions for an hour.

Calle Crisologo, named after Don Mena Crisologo, the first Civil Governor of Ilocos Sur during the American regime was the commercial district of Vigan during the Spanish and early American period. The old name of this district is “Kasanglayan” or place of the Chinese. The houses all along the street served a double purpose then, the ground floor were occupied by shops (mostly owned by the Chinese) that sold dry goods while the second floors functioned as residences. Now the ground floors of the houses were converted into shops, catering to the tourist trade by their offerings of souvenirs, furniture, and genuine antiques and samples of authentic Ilocano weaving in different kinds of “Abel” cloth.

Vigan Cathedral
Vigan Cathedral (also known as St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral) is an earthquake Baroque-styled church built in 1574 commissioned by Spaniard Juan de Salcedo located in the Ilocos region.

The first Vigan Cathedral was ordered and built in 1574 by Juan de Salcedo. Another version of the church was again constructed in 1641 but was unfortunately destroyed by an earthquake. A reconstructed church was gutted with fire in 1739. The current church was constructed in 1790 and was finished in 1800.

inside the cathedral
Vigan Cathedral features Neo-Gothic and pseudo Romanesque motifs. The baroque-styled church has thick buttresses to support it through earthquakes and typhoons.

On January 31, 1790, the cornerstone of the present Vigan Cathedral was placed. Most of the original features of the church interior are still intact. The Cathedral has twelve altars with hammered-silver panels, three naves, and a choir loft. Above the main doorway is an alcove that depicts the conversion of St. Paul. After four years the walls were finished, all in stone, the baptistery was completed together with the side chapels; the beautiful facade was finished up to the cornice and the wall at the back of the cathedral was also ready. The Church's main door held by two pairs of columns which rise to the second tier of the facade. The moldings on its facade and the brass communion rails give hints of the Chinese influence in the church's designs and architecture. Its bell tower stands separately in Plaza Burgos, 10 meters south of the cathedral. The bell tower is about 25 meters high and it is surmounted by a large bronze weathercock that is said to symbolize St Peter. The cathedral was the first building in Ilocos with tiles on the roof.

Puerto Prinsesa City, Palawan

Puerto Prinsesa is the capital of the island of Palawan.  I am so proud of this city because this is where I spent some of my childhood days.  I even studied for a year at Holy Trinity College in Puerto Prinsesa.  The city has been known and acclaimed as the cleanest and greenest city in the Philippines.  The city has also been internationally recognized for environmental excellence.

This is the second out-of-town of barkada after the Bohol-Cebu trip.  So sorry this vacation happened long time ago.  I just need to document this for my kids.  Anyway you may continue reading and you may pick some infos and tips when you travel to Puerto Prinsesa.

ahhhhh, my kids are so cute talaga during their younger years

just arrived!

Let's explore Puerto Prinsesa
Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, Zestair all have daily flights to Puerto Prinsesa.  The modes of transportation within the city are tricycles offering minimum fare when you get them at the National Road.  You may be charged overpriced when you flagged them at the airport.

We rented a van all throughout our stay in Puerto Prinsesa.  For rates and reservations click here

hahaha =)

kulitan sa guesthouse... Oh Yeah!!!

First Day : City Tour. Butterfly Garden, Crocodile Farm, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, Mitra's Farm.

Butterfly Farm

ang cute ng smile ng ostrich, ahahahahaha =)

parang wala kaming matinong picture na mag anak noon ah, hahaha =)

Nice!

Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm
we don't know where to look at si Josh inaantok na talaga...
Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm is essentially a village in complete contrast of a penal establishment one would have in mind. There are about a two thousand prisoners there and in the center of all their work is the central village square. One might be surprised that the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm has no walls and almost no barriers. The only precaution that this establishment makes in terms of security is a head count 3 times a day when the prisoners are mandated to gather in the central village square. However, despite being a low security prison, no prisoners attempt to escape for a variety of reasons: first, prisoners are provided with vocational activities of their choice, transportation arrangements are almost impossible for a prisoner and if a prisoner chooses to escape through the mountains, they would face a certain death. In addition, the prisoners at Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm are allowed to live with their families during the time that they are serving their sentence.

The super relaxing Mitra's Farm...
A nice place that over looks Honda Bay and Dos Palmas Island...

There are horse back riding and zip lining (360 meters) for Php500 at Mitra's Farm.

Second Day : a trip to Underground River...

boat ride going to the Underground River

ngiting nakakaloko o ngiting naiinip na =)

The Puerto Prinsesa Subterranean River National Park is a protected area of the Philippines located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the city center of Puerto Prinsesa, Palawan.  The river is also called Puerto Prinsesa Underground River.  The national park is located in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the western coast of the island.  It is bordered by St. Paul Bay to the north and the Babuyan River to the east.  The City Government of Puerto Prinsesa has managed the National Park since 1992.  The entrance to the subterranean river is a short hike or boat ride from the town Sabang.
In 2010, a group of environmentalists and geologists discovered that the underground river has a second floor, which means that there are small waterfalls inside the cave.  They also found a cave dome measuring 300 m (980 ft) above the underground river, rock formations, large bats, a deep water hole in the river, more river channels, another deep cave, as well as marine creatures and more.  Deeper areas of the underground river are almost impossible to explore due to oxygen deprivation.
On November 11, 2011, Puerto Prinsesa Underground River was provisionally chosen as one of the New7Wonders of Nature.  This selection was offcially confirmed on January 28, 2012.

Underground River when it is not much crowded =)

Note. A permit is now necessary to visit the underground river and only available in Puerto Princesa, though an online system is in construction. Beware that like any other hardworking government office they finish their day at 4pm, so a permit for next day needs to be arranged before that. Travel agents normally can arrange it for you.

Third day : Island Hopping in Honda Bay

Honda Bay is comprised of several islets with shallow reefs bordering wonderful beaches which have become the much loved swimming, snorkeling, and diving destinations of local residents and tourists. The best recognized islands of Honda Bay are Cowrie and Bat named because of the large fruit bats coming out of their holes at sundown for their evening feed. Another is Snake island, of curvaceous tongue shape like a snake and with a white sand beach noted for large and lovely shells. Other interesting islands are Canon, Pandan, Starfish, Lu-Li Island (derived from the word ""lulubog-lilitaw"", meaning floating and sinking island, is visible only during low tide), Señorita Island (the breeding site of lapu-lapu fish). and Meara Marina. Starfish Island, with coral reefs breaking crystal clear water onto empty, fine white sand beaches and clear water that teems with starfish. Arreceffi Island contains the luxury Dos Palmas Beach Resort, while lesser accommodation can be found on other islands, or stay at Puerto Princesa Beach resort and take a half hour boat trip to your much loved deserted beach. Lodging facilities are available for overnight stays in the islands of Meara Marina and Starfish (Sandbar Resort).
