Zenkov Cathedral and Panfilov Park in Almaty, Kazakhstan
The Zenkov Cathedral, also known as the Ascension Cathedral, was completed in 1907. It is made entirely of wood and was constructed without using a single metal nail. Standing at 56 meters high, it is one of the tallest wooden churches in the world. As you walk inside the cathedral, you can admire beautiful religious paintings, intricate wooden artwork, and icons. Entrance is free, but women are required to cover their heads, shoulders, and knees. Hats must also be removed when entering the cathedral.
Zenkov Cathedral is located in the heart of Almaty. From our accommodation at Abay Hostel, it was just within walking distance. However, it was still included in our 3D/2N tour with Primo PH Travel and Tours. We spent our two nights in Almaty at Saty Village, which is located near several popular tourist attractions, including Kaindy and Kolsai Lakes, Charyn Canyon, Moon Canyon, and Black Canyon.
The cathedral is located along Gogol Street and can easily be reached on foot or by metro. If you take the metro, you can get off at Zhibek Zholy Station and walk from there. Near the cathedral, there is also a spot where you can feed pigeons, making it a fun place to take photos and capture memorable moments.
Overall, Zenkov Cathedral is a beautiful and historic landmark that is definitely worth visiting when exploring Almaty. Its unique wooden architecture, colorful interior, and peaceful surroundings make it one of the city's must-see attractions.
Panfilov Park, officially known as the Park of the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, is an 18-hectare historic urban park located in the heart of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Established in the 1870s, the park is one of the city's oldest green spaces and is known for its tree-lined paths, peaceful atmosphere, and important historical monuments.
The park is named in honor of the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, soldiers of the 316th Rifle Division who fought during the Battle of Moscow in November 1941. The soldiers became celebrated for their resistance against the advancing German forces during World War II. The division was commanded by Major General Ivan Panfilov, whose name is also closely associated with the park and its memorials.
One of the park's most significant attractions is the Memorial of Glory, which was unveiled in 1975 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II. The memorial complex includes several sculptural sections representing courage, sacrifice, and victory. At its center is the famous Eternal Flame, which was lit in 1975 and remains an important place for visitors to pay their respects to those who died during the war.
Beyond its historical monuments, the park provides a tranquil green space for residents and visitors. Its broad paths and mature trees—including oaks, elms, maples, poplars, pines, and firs—make it a pleasant place for walking and relaxing. Today, Panfilov Park serves as both a recreational area and an important symbol of Almaty's history, preserving the memory of those who fought during World War II while bringing together several of the city's most notable cultural landmarks.
